Things have been hopping at Active Health Solutions this month and we’ve been booking a lot of Placement Assessments. January, it seems, has been of a fresh start for many people who want to make 2019 a healthier year! Many movers new to AHS have questions, some apprehension, and want to be pointed in the right direction.
When a future participant walks through our door and wants to get moving, it is helpful to figure out where our starting point is. But what is the process and what are we looking for? First of all, an appointment is booked and paperwork is sent home. This paperwork consists of a PAR-Q+ (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) and a Client Information Questionnaire, which essentially gives us information about medical conditions, medications, participation abilities, current health, and health goals. At the appointed time, we review this collected data and then go deeper.
Through a collaborative process and combination of an extended conversation and movement screening, we are assessing capacities, the issues and injuries, the imbalances (between left and right sides of the body and various joints), the compensations occurring, and what the priorities for better health are. And then we move to the private assessment room and fitness floor and watch performance from a list of tasks – like standing posture, movements through various joints (like shoulders and hips), basic static and dynamic balance, and squatting. Our basic assessment is a combination of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) fundamental movements and our own screens that will ensure any deficiencies are addressed.
At the end of the session we are able to safely recommend the correct class to join. This meeting takes about 30-45 minutes and gives us a pathway to start down.
